When my husband and I travel within the US, we love to visit national parks. We just loved Mammoth Lakes California. Mammoth Lakes is a town in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. It's known for the Mammoth Mountain and June Mountain ski areas and nearby trails. The town is a base for Devils Postpile National Monument, a formation of basalt columns, and the soaring Rainbow Falls. To the north, saltwater Mono Lake is dotted with limestone towers. Yosemite National Park, with its granite cliffs and ancient sequoias, is nearby.
When is the best time to visit? It’s best to visit in the Fall, as there are fewer visitors, and flights are cheaper than usual. The months of September, October, and November are considered an off-season for Mammoth Lakes. We went in September which was perfect for us weather wise. We stayed in town at the Westin and the village was full of cute restaurants, pubs and boutiques.
We hiked daily and enjoyed soaking the natural springs.
Since you would most likely fly into Reno Nevada, the ride into Mammoth Lakes is breathtaking.
