Overpriced, Overcomplicated, Underwhelming

Writer's picture: Mandi CaseyMandi Casey

I’ve been trying to find the right words to express my feelings about dining out lately, but the truth is, it’s been one disappointment after another—lackluster quality, uninspired flavors, and subpar service. I catch myself wondering, Am I just that good of a cook that everything else feels dull by comparison? Haha, no, that’s not it. The real problem is that many restaurants seem to have lost sight of what truly matters: quality ingredients and well-executed simplicity. Instead of chasing trends or overcomplicating dishes, the focus should be on flavor, freshness, and genuine care in preparation. When did a truly great meal out become so rare?

I love dining out for the social aspect, but when I’m frequently spending over $100 and walking away disappointed, I have to ask myself—is it smarter to just host at home? My friends certainly wouldn’t mind, and I don’t always have to spend hours in the kitchen to serve up something delicious.

With warmer days ahead, the idea of sharing good food and wine on my patio with great company feels like the better way to go. Maybe this is the new "dining out."
