I am often asked………..what the heck is passata???
Passata is simply puréed, strained uncooked tomatoes… that's it. There are no fillers and no distractions. Just 100% tomatoes. Tomatoes are crushed, then puréed and finally strained to remove any tomato pieces, skins and seeds. Passata is also labeled “tomato purée” or “strained tomatoes”.
It originated in Italy but is used throughout Europe. In fact, every cooking class I have taken in Italy has used jarred passata. You will never see a can.
If passata is called for in your recipe, and you cannot find it in your store, the best substitution is tomato purée.
But I have great news, Lidl always carry’s imported Italian passata!! They also have tubes of tomato paste, which I always have on hand.
